Kallie Dodd, born in Centralia, Illinois in 2000, is a mixed media artist with a focus in oil paint, collage, charcoal, and more. The foundation of her work is academic figuration, but has expanded into experimentation with different mediums and techniques.

About

Dodd received her BFA in Drawing and Painting at Laguna College of Art and Design and graduated in the spring of 2023. Dodd has received a few awards that have helped her in continuing her education at LCAD, such as the Chad Beguelin Award(2019) and her merit scholarship that she received from LCAD. She has also been honored with the Nina Fitzpatrick Endowed Scholarship in 2021. She was presented the Plotkin Foundation Award through LCAD as well. She is a student member of Laguna Plein Air Painters Association and was an intern in their gallery. Dodd also participated in a mentorship with the Moulton Museum through LCAD. Dodd was part of an installation at the Orange County Museum of Art where she had been an artist assistant to Tony Lewis. The installation “Casual-T” pushed her creativity and inspired her to look into the creative process of mixing medias. She is currently working on new projects that combine the traditional techniques of oil painting and the modern techniques of collage.

Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember, I have had a connection with art and this connection has grown into a love that has turned into a passion to help preserve and protect the art of myself, my peers and the many people that inspire all of us. I have been making a body of work using the representational painting style influenced from teachers, peers, and artists I am inspired by and adding the element of collage for a different degree of depth. Creating work that dives into my own experience of time, the people in my life, and also the places in which I have grown is my artistic focus. I am painting to express the questions I have about time and to show my personal growth through exploring these themes using my own struggles with the past, present and the future. I blend oil paint and collage to create vivid, layered reflections of my childhood and hometown. Through rich textures and dynamic compositions, I seek to capture the nostalgia and complexity of these formative experiences. My art serves as a personal journey back to the places and moments that have shaped my identity, inviting viewers to explore their own memories and connections to their past.

Through high school and my BFA program, I have built a friendship with many mediums. My process begins with selecting pieces that will be used for the collage. The collage in most of these paintings are used as an underpainting but are also incorporated into the final piece itself. That process is done by using the oil paint to create an overlaid image that interacts with the collage underneath. The collage is revealed more in certain areas than others depending on how I want the overlaid painting to appear on the canvas. Using the traditional, skill-based techniques that I was taught at LCAD and combining them with my own personal images and experiences has helped push my art forward to a higher quality that viewers can visually appreciate and mentally digest.
